Hina dolls are put out on the every 3rd of March for the Hinamatsuri, which is a day to pray for the healthy growth of girls. In the lunar calendar, around the 3rd of March is the time that the peach flower begins to bloom. From ancient times, peaches were said to be a fortunate food in Japan. The fruits protect you from bad luck. So, March 3rd and the timing of the good luck peach were put together as one. Thus Hinamatsuri is also called MOMONO SEKKU in Japan. (Momo is peach and Sekku is period in Japanese.) Craftsman: Tadao MATSUDA(1956-) 松田忠雄 Style: Naruko 鳴子 He was born as the first son of Mitsuo MATSUDA(1929-2010) who was a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman. He enjoyed woodworking under the guidance of his father when he was junior high school. He started learning woodwork as his job and making kokeshi dolls from 1976. His kokeshi masters were Mitsuo Matsuda (his father) and Hatsumi Matsuda (1901-1989 his grandfather). Tadao is a kokeshi master of his son Tomohiro MATSUDA. Especially for women kokeshi craftsperson, there are two kinds of working styles. The ones who make every process of the doll even carving wood. The others paint only. Mariko is the former. She said in the ‘Traditional kokeshi artist file’ book that she respects the old Naruko kokeshi, which were closer to children more than the kokeshi nowadays. And she hopes to make the warm expression that the old kokeshi dolls have. This is a cute and lovely doll as she said. The flower on the body is pink. Craftswoman: Mariko KAKIZAWA 柿澤眞理子 Style: Naruko 鳴子系 She was born in 1940. She got married to Koretaka Kakizawa who was a kokeshi craftsman. She started learning wood work from 1971 and making kokeshi dolls from 1981 under the guidance of her husband. She stopped making kokeshi dolls for a moment. But in 2016, when she was devastated after her husband died, her son Yoshinobu (who is a kokeshi craftsman) suggested she makes kokeshi again. He drew a snowman and Kagamimochi on the Ejiko and mini kokeshi dolls in the pot. Kagamimochi is a traditional New Year’s decoration in Japan. We stack two mochis, Japanese orange and set them in front of some places like a family shrine, Buddhist shrine or a small space you think is important such as your desk and car. He combined a seasonal tradition with a regular Togatta style pattern on this doll. Craftsman: Yoshio OGASAWARA 小笠原義雄 “He was born in Togatta (miyagi prefecture) on January 22, 1936. In 1952, he started making wood turned products, continuing for about five years. At age 20, he began working as a craftsman in Sendai. Usually, Daikoku-sama is drawn with Uchideno-koduchi, which is a magic mallet that gives us anything that to grant a wish. But Ogasawara made him a with fun appearance in a simple folk image. Kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll, which are crafting over 160 years in northern region of Tohoku, Japan. Tsuki means ‘moon’, O is a honorific expression for Tsuki, and Mi is 'look' in Japanese. Especially, the full moon in September is called ‘Chushu no meigetsu’ in Japanese, which is ‘harvest moon’ in the Asian area, we place some offerings and give thanks to the moon for the harvest. Depending on the country, some kinds of creatures are living on the moon. It was believed that rabbits lived on the moon and were making Mochi in Japan. He drew a silhouette of the scenery of mountains in the dark purple night on this kokeshi. Craftsman : Teruyuki HIRAGA 平賀輝幸 Style: Sakunami He was born in1972. He started learning to make kokeshi from 1987 under the guidance of his grandfather Kenjiro Hiraga and his father Kenichi Hiraga. Teruyuki is the fourth member of the Hiraga family whose work belongs the HIRAGAKOKESHI- TEN.
