Hina dolls are put out on the every 3rd of March for the Hinamatsuri, which is a day to pray for the healthy growth of girls. In the lunar calendar, around the 3rd of March is the time that the peach flower begins to bloom. From ancient times, peaches were said to be a fortunate food in Japan. The fruits protect you from bad luck. So, March 3rd and the timing of the good luck peach were put together as one. Thus Hinamatsuri is also called MOMONO SEKKU in Japan. (Momo is peach and Sekku is period in Japanese.) Craftsman: Tadao MATSUDA(1956-) 松田忠雄 Style: Naruko 鳴子 He was born as the first son of Mitsuo MATSUDA(1929-2010) who was a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman. His kokeshi masters were Mitsuo Matsuda (his father) and Hatsumi Matsuda (1901-1989 his grandfather). Tadao is a kokeshi master of his son Tomohiro MATSUDA. In the lunar calendar, around the 3rd of March is the time that the peach flower begins to bloom. From ancient times, peaches were said to be a fortunate food in Japan. The fruits protect you from bad luck. So, March 3rd and the timing of the good luck peach were put together as one. Thus Hinamatsuri is also called MOMONO SEKKU in Japan. (Momo is peach and Sekku is period in Japanese.) Jizo is famous as the guardian deity of children. The alternate meaning is Doso-jin, which is a town and traveler’s guardian deity in Japan. The red cape is a characteristic of O-Jizo-san. (O and san are honorific titles in Japnese.) Because of the variety of world changing events in recent years, he made this kokeshi with your happiness in mind. Note: Because kokeshi dolls were toys for children a long time ago, those dolls might contain kokeshi craftsmen’s hopes and mentality. We made this kokeshi as a fortunate product. Kokeshi dolls don’t have a religious meaning. Kokeshi was made from natural wood, the discolouration of the top of the head was happened when the wood was drying.
