仙台市作並こけし工人の平賀輝幸さんから届いた、本人型の作並こけしです。
まるで羽ばたく鳥のようにも見える作並こけしのカニ菊模様が、華やかな印象のこけしです。

This is a Honnin gata Dento kokeshi doll, which is an original yet traditional style Sakunami kokeshi, by Teruyuki HIRAGA in Tohoku, Japan.
Honnin means ‘own’, gata(kata) is ‘style’ and Dento means ‘traditional’ in Japanese.

There are 12 styles of traditional kokeshi dolls in the northern part of Tohoku, Japan. Each style has specific elements, which like the facial expression, body shape, patterns and so on.
The body pattern has a chrysanthemum flower, which looks like crab, is a characteristic of Sakunami kokeshi doll.

Mr. Hiraga is making many kinds of ‘kawaii’ kokeshi dolls since early days of his career. But he thinks that even in the future, traditional kokeshi will be more popular than those cute kokeshi dolls, which he is making now.

A Rakugo storyteller, which is a traditional comic style of Japanese storytelling, said that we can improve the sense of storytelling from new and modern stories and brush up on our skills from the classic style.

To make traditional and cute kokeshi dolls are two sides of the same coin for Hiraga as well.

He was born in1972. He started learning to make kokeshi from 1987 under the guidance of his grandfather Kenjiro Hiraga and his father Kenichi Hiraga. Teruyuki is the fourth member of the Hiraga family whose work belongs the HIRAGAKOKESHI- TEN.
