作並系こけしの平賀輝幸工人から届いたお月見こけしです。
まん丸な月と見上げるうさぎ、月明かりに浮かぶ山や森のシルエットと薄っすらとまかれた銀粉。中秋の名月が静かに輝くこけしです。

どうぞゆっくりと工人の手わざをご鑑賞ください。

This kokeshi, which has some rabbits and a full moon drawn on it, is called Otsukimi Kokeshi, by Teruyuki HIRAGA (1972-) who is a Sakunami style kokeshi craftsman.

Tsuki means ‘moon’, O is an honorific expression for Tsuki, and Mi (miru) is 'look' in Japanese. Especially, the full moon in September or October is called ‘Chushu no meigetsu’ in Japanese, which is ‘harvest moon’ in the Asian area. We place some offerings and give thanks to the moon for the harvest. (in 2025, the Chushu no meigetsu is October 6th)

Depending on the country, some kinds of creatures are living on the moon. It was believed that rabbits lived on the moon and were making Mochi in Japan. He drew a silhouette of the scenery of mountains in the dark purple night on this kokeshi and slightly painted with silver powder to express stars in the night.
